How to analyse a job ad before you apply
This method helps you avoid low-fit applications and focus your effort where it has the highest chance of payoff.
1. Separate core requirements from nice-to-haves
Highlight repeated requirements, mandatory certifications, and role-critical capabilities. Treat repeated items as core unless there is clear evidence otherwise.
2. Infer what success looks like
Read responsibilities and team context for clues about pressure points. Ask: what will this person be expected to fix, ship, or stabilise in the first six months?
3. Map your evidence line by line
For each core requirement, write one concrete example from your own work, projects, volunteering, or study. If you cannot produce evidence, that is a fit warning.
4. Decide using a simple rule
Apply when you can evidence most core requirements and explain the rest credibly. If your gaps are mostly core and hard to bridge quickly, skip and reallocate time.
